The ranch style house lends itself to a rugged look. Cistus ‘Mickie’ (rockrose) is extremely reliable in full sun, warm summer environments. Euphorbia echoes the yellow theme of the front yard and adds architectural interest from the leaf shape. Parkinsonia (Palo Verde tree) lends to light shade and a touch of wispiness with light green, small leaves. What a nice change for tree trunks from drab brown with rough texture to a smooth green! Anigozanthos (Kangaroo paw) also adds wonderful structure to this garden with bold vertical lines and bright orange colors. A ‘warm color’ garden for full sun front yards that is low maintenance and attractive.

This bulbine is the compact variation of yellow bulbine. This plant grows to about 1' tall by 1'-2' wide. Orange flowers bloom almost all year long. Plants stay evergreen, but will freeze to the ground in the event of serious frost. However, frost- damaged plants will regrow in spring. Delicate coppery orange flowers with fluffy yellow centers are on tall spikes that rise above the foliage. This selection is free flowering in spring, summer and fall.

Broad clusters of lime green flowers appear in winter and spring. These flowers create dense, round cylindrical masses! This evergreen perennial has upright stems forming a 4' tall dome-shaped bush. Crowded all along the stems are narrow, blue-green leaves. Once it's established, it is drought tolerant. Until the seeds ripen, the flower color holds with only slight fading. At that point, the stalks should be cut out at the base. Use gloves as sap is poisonous or could cause contact dermatitis.

Brilliant chartreuse-yellow, needle-like foliage forms a quick groundcover. Adds cheery color to containers, dry slopes and flowering borders. Excellent for use as year-round coverage for beds with spring bulbs. In winter, foliage turns orange in northern climates. Evergreen in mild climates.

This stable variegated form of Cistus hybridus has a low mounding habit that hugs the ground and creates a super colorful, evergreen colorspot. 'Mickie' hails from northern Washington State and has survived some brutal winters. Charming white flowers punctuate the flashy foliage in May and June. Use in fall mixed containers like you would use Coleus in summer. This perennial quickly reaches 18" tall and spreads 36". It does best in full sun and prefers poor to moderately fertile soil with good drainage. Tolerant of mildly alkaline soils. Best pH range: 6.5-8.5. Water deeply and infrequently once established. Drought tolerant. Similar to the British variety 'Gold Prize', this stable variegated form of Cistus hybridus has a lower, mounding habit and has stable variegation. Use as a low mounding shrub as an accent or in mass planting. Use in fall in containers with several plants. All Cistus prefer dry, sunny habitats and poor soils.
